Community Protection Notices (CPNs) are a form of civil preventative order employed in certain jurisdictions, such as England, to address crime control. This descriptive study, utilizing library research and analysis of collected data, seeks to answer the following questions: What constitutes a CPN? And what are the potential detriments arising from their application? CPNs aim to expedite and enhance the effectiveness of non-judicial actions by official authorities, including police and community support officers, in response to anti-social behaviour. Issued by designated competent authorities, this policy operates through a two-stage process: initially, a warning is issued to the individual at risk of engaging in deviant behaviour or causing harm to others; subsequent violation of this warning leads to the issuance of a CPN and consequent sanctions. Among the potential drawbacks of CPNs are the infringement of the presumption of innocence, violation of the rule of law, consequentialism and its conflict with general strain theory, suppression rather than problem-solving approaches, infringement of civil liberties, and excessive state control.
